Getting to Know the Faces of FPCG

We first meet Marlene Young in 2005 when she came into the fold of First Church.

Marlene is a born and bred Germantowner having been preceded by two previous generations through her great grandfather Silas Davenport. As a result of the influence, she has a special connection and knowledge of Germantown. She attended the segregated elementary school, then Roosevelt Junior High and Germantown High.

Marlene married and left Germantown for some time but returned and continued raising her family of two boys and three girls. She now has thirteen grandchildren and five great grand children including Angel and Anair whom she brought to Sunday School here in 2011.

Fostering the development of children in all ways has been an important force in Marlene’s life.

She attended Philadelphia Community College and Temple University which prepared her for a career in Social Services, most significantly on behalf of and with young children and teenagers.

Marlene is very serious about Bible studies. She firmly believes Bible study should have prominence in christian life.

Did you know that Marlene expresses her creative spirit with framing thought and words into poetry? She is a member of a poetry group and has been published. Some of us have read and been gifted with her work. She credits and thanks her father for her gift of writing and singing. He was a musician and writer.

Before concluding our conversation Marlene spoke of her concerns for the future of the Presbterian Church as a whole. She does believe it lies with the young children and young adults and is pleased to see young children and their parents attending First Church on Sunday mornings.
