What a winter we have had! And it is not over yet; it looks like more difficult weather is headed our way this week.
Sometimes it is necessary to cancel our worship service. Such a decision is made at the last minute and in case of such an emergency, we will have the cancellation announced on KYW Radio (1060 AM) and local television stations.
During the week if the Philadelphia Public Schools are closed due to inclement weather the church will also be closed.
Always use your best judgment about venturing out in bad weather.

Quarterly seminar - 1/30 at 11:30am in the Finney room
This week’s financial seminar will be the fourth in a continuing series that was prompted by requests from the 2009 Church Study. One of the seven recommendations was that a great need exists for more information and knowledge about finances.
The prior seminars provided a foundation for understanding how our resources are managed as well as where they come from and where they are expended.
This seminar will focus on the financial results for 2010 and the financial outlook and challenges in 2011.

Celebrating Dr. King’s legacy of Service
For the second year, FPCG recognized the MLK Day of Service at church by hosting church volunteers. These committed people joined together in small groups to clean, paint, fix up, or do whatever was necessary to keep our beautiful church home looking like the church facility that we have been entrusted to maintain by our former elders.
The Property Committee organized specific projects or task. Some of the projects included painting the small bathroom, cleaning the sanctuary, cleaning hand bells, cleaning the kitchen, and many other projects.
There was an opportunity for anyone and everyone to help out. Stay tuned for photos!

You are invited to join the Serendipity Bible Study Sundays at 11:30am in the Jennings Room for a 7 week discussion of the book of Acts.
Acts relates the dynamic story of the early days of the Christian church beginning with the Ascension of Jesus and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. As the introduction in the Serendipity Bible states, ”in 30 short years, the church grew from what was considered an insignificant Jewish sect to a major force in the Roman Empire.”
Come learn how this happened, what “growing pains” and miracles the church experienced along the way, and how the story of the early church has much to teach us in growing in faith and power in our individual and communal lives.
Join us on Sunday’s at 11:30 in the Jennings Room. For more info, talk to Rev. Kevin Porter.

Friends of Vernon Park
The Friends of Vernon Park is a non-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to the restoration and upkeep of Vernon Park. In recent years their partnership with the Department of Recreation and Philadelphia Green has completely transformed the park from an eyesore to a beautiful oasis that borders our church.
The park is now used by the YMCA and our day camp. This work was made possible by grants from the Horticultural Society, William Penn and Lila Wallace Foundations.
None of this grant money can be used for winter maintenance and funds are needed to maintain a part-time worker from October to April. Sales of poinsettias supply some of the money but our help is still needed.
Help keep Vernon Park beautiful with a generous donation to the January Challenge Offering. Checks should be made payable to First Church and marked Friends of Vernon Park.
