Volunteers Needed for Community Festivals
Come and reflect the diversity of FPCG
From time to time, at least four times a year, the plea goes out for volunteers to assist at events throughout the community, events at which the church has a booth or table. The four venues include: Mt. Airy Day in May, the East Falls Flea Market in June, the People’s Festival in August and the Battle of Germantown in October.
At those events, all drawing different populations, First Church has very much been a presence for several years. Under the banner of The First Presbyterian Church in Germantown, “committed to a peaceful Germantown,” and surrounded by standup signs and pictures, our volunteers greet passersby, distribute brochures about the church, and answer questions.
But the most popular aspect of our participation is the distribution of balloons to children. After a couple of hours into each event, the green balloons imprinted with the church’s logo can be seen hovering all over. One day last year over 800 balloons were handed out!
As a result of our participating in these community events, we have had people come to services and then become involved in the activities of the church. A few have become members. At each of these occasions, a few faithful volunteers have carried the good news about us, but the diversity so characteristic of our congregation has not been apparent. The stand‑up banners and time‑lines may reflect our diversity, but often the folks standing under the canopy do not.
The task is an easy one!
For one hour (or more, if you would like), join with your fellow members in standing or sitting under a tent or wandering about the grounds telling about the First Presbyterian Church in Germantown. Or instead of meeting the public, help with the blowing up and tying of the balloons.
Our next involvement will be in the People's Festival to be held in Vernon Park on Saturday and Sunday, August 14 and 15. Please think about helping out the next time the plea goes out. Many thanks to the participants in East Falls Day on June 12: Bill Young, Randy Rosensteel, Gloria Bethea, Denise Cowie, Jim Thompson, Larry Elliott, Daniel Conner, Bob Archer, David Daugherty, and Kevin Porter.
