The Rev. Aaron Gast Returns to FPCG
As part of our bicentennial celebration, The Rev. Aaron Gast preached this past Sunday, Jan. 25th at our 10:00 worship service! Listen to his sermon by clicking here or visiting our podcast page.
Dr. Gast was the minister of the church from 1967 until 1981. During that time, he guided the congregation in instituting 30 new programs, organizations and features in the church’s life. Significant among them were tutoring sessions and Daily Vacation Bible School.
Under Dr. Gast’s leadership, First Germantown was also involved in 16 organizations and validated projects in the Greater Germantown area, associations which continue today: the Germantown Y.M.C.A., the Northwest Interfaith Movement and the Whosoever Gospel Mission.
A graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary and a former dean of the Conwell School of Theology at Temple University, Dr. Gast is well-known for his groundwork in theological education for urban ministry. An annual award for urban ministry at the Princeton seminary is named for Gast.
As the twenty-second pastor of First Germantown, Gast continued a ministry which extends back to the Rev. Dr. Samuel Blair in whose house at Germantown and Walnut Lane the congregation dates its beginning prior to 1809.
Upcoming events in the congregation’s bicentennial celebration include “Breakfast with Tiffanies,” a brunch and presentation on February 21 inspired by the several Tiffany stained glass windows in the church and “Tea with Violet,” an opportunity on May 9 to view the Violet Oakley murals with a local authority.
Today, Dr. Nancy E. Muth is the pastor of the church located at 35 West Chelten Avenue. Parking is available in two lots adjacent to the church. More information about any of the services and programs of the church may be obtained by calling 215-843-8811.
