“Second Tuesday” Event in Washington, D.C
Do you want to make a difference in our nation’s capital? You can!
On Tuesday, March 10th, ten members from seven Presbyterian churches in our Philadelphia Presbytery traveled to Washington, D.C. to be briefed by the Presbytery Washington Office on what’s happening in Congress.
In addition to meeting with and raising issues with the staff of our Pennsylvania senators, this group learned from the Presbytery that the key players dealing with healthcare are Senator Waxman and Bokus and Dodd, representing Senator Kennedy.
Other budget considerations were discussed in the Presbytery briefing, including:
- the environment (cap on carbon emission and the use of ethanol)
- access to and improvement in nutrition in schools
- after school programs, and education

The final briefing was on the proposal to ease travel restrictions to Cuba and possibility of removing all restrictions for cultural and humanitarian reasons. We learned that EXXON Oil wants to drill in Cuba and is pushing this move. Senator Lugar (a rather conservative Republican) has written a report indicating that the U.S. embargo has utterly failed.
