Help Out Our Prison Ministry
Volunteers needed Dec 6-7
An unusual volunteer opportunity is awaiting you this holiday season early enough so that it won’t take away time from your celebrations, your own gift wrapping.
The opportunity is to help assemble holiday packages for the approximately 3,900 inmates at Graterford Prison. In a huge warehouse on the prison grounds, you will gather with other men and women from area churches and retirement communities to prepare the gifts.
Bags in hand, you will circle tables on which such items as socks, date books, TastyKakes, instant coffee and hot chocolate are stacked high for you to pick up and put in the bags.
You may even choose to be among those who tie the packages and then box them. Some of the members of the prison constituency will assist. Afterwards, you will join in a hearty lunch prepared by Graterford. Volunteers—men and women—are needed on Tuesday, December 6, when we will leave in the church van to be at the prison from 9:30 am until 1:00 pm.
On Wednesday, December 7, only men will be needed on the day the gifts are handed out in the ac-tual housing units. Distribution begins at 10:00 am. Again, the church van will be used for transportation.
