“Destined for Diversity” - Save the Date!
The World Premier of Precious Places 2010 is Tuesday, April 6th! The screening will begin at 7pm at the International House (3701 Chestnut Street) and is free and open to the public.
Scribe’s Precious Places Community History Project is a community oral history project inviting members of Philadelphia’s many neighborhoods to document the buildings, public spaces, parks, landmarks and other sites that hold the memories of our communities and define where we live.
First Pres was selected as one of this year’s precious places! “Destined for Diversity” is the title of our film.
What is Destined for Diversity about? In 1955, when faced with a decision to follow an affluent population out of Germantown, the First Presbyterian Church’s board of trustees chose to remain the neighborhood. As the population underwent rapid demographic change, the church reached out to the neighborhood’s new residents. Through the church’s decision to stay and the debate that preceded it, this video explores the relationship between First Presbyterian and the Germantown community, revealing why many residents still consider the church the heart of their community.
We hope to see you at the premier! For you Facebook folks out there, feel free to invite your friends to the premiere by visiting this link: Precious Places Premiere on Facebook.

While we were gathering photos and footage for theScribe video, Bea Gardner graciously loaned us some amazing home movies!
Join us on Sunday, April 11 at 5:00 PM
A special evening is being planned to show Bea's movies and others featuring The First Presbyterian Church in Germantown. First we will view old 8mm films (copied to DVD) that were taken by Bea and Bill Gardner fifty years ago and more. There are films of Easter Sundays and of the Young Adult Group at play. Then we will show the documentary film made just this year of First Church, which tells of our past and how it has shaped our present ministry.
The evening will begin with a covered dish supper. So bring a food item to share of a meat, salad/vegetable or dessert. Beverages will be supplied.
Don't miss this opportunity to stroll down Memory Lane with your First Pres family!
