Introducing Delores (Mandy) Adams
I have been a member of FPCG for almost two years.
I am not new to the Presbyterian Church in the Philadelphia area - I came from New Covenant Presbyterian Church, which I had been a part of since I was thirteen.
Early in my youth I came to understand the awesome presence of God in my life, and chose to follow his desired will for my life. God has given me a great passion for children and youth ministries.
In the past, I have served in a wide variety of ways in these types of ministries (youth leader, Sunday school teacher of all ages including adults, assistant Sunday school superintendent, retreat planner, community outreach program developer etc.).
I am looking forward to working as the director for the elementary age youth group we are forming in the near future. We have all kinds of exciting projects and plans for this particular group.

By Eileen Jones, Director of Urban Ministry
On Monday August 17 everything seemed normal as I approached the front of the church. I pulled into the parking lot and noticed immediately that four cars were missing. Entering the building, there was no flip chart stating instructions and highlights for the week. When I crossed the threshold into the Longstreth Auditorium I was greeted by the sound of silence.
The energy and vitality that accompanied children, and which greeted anyone entering the building the past seven weeks, was gone. Left was an empty room and the fresh smell of Murphy’s oil soap. Immediately, I thought of Jesus saying “suffer the little children and forbid them not to come to me”. Missing in that space was the presence, energy and contagious enthusiasm of children that is a witness to us all. What if we didn’t operate a camp program?
With this thought in mind, suddenly my heart was filled with a sense of pride and gratitude for the members and leaders of First Church who each year support the camp program that provides an opportunity for children to come to Christ, and to grow in faith and community.

Summer time is filled with hot, hazy days and… lots of opportunity for mischief if activities for our children are not well planned and supervised!
Between First Church’s day camp and the overnight camping experience provided at Kirkwood Camp in the Poconos, our children can enjoy up to eight weeks of structured, Christ centered activities under the direction of well trained responsible staff.
Our day camp continues to offer the best of what a daily vacation bible school and day camp can give: lots of music, crafts, bible study and recreation. Kirkwood offers an escape from the city to the beautiful and tranquil experience of nature in the Pocono mountains.
June’s Challenge Offering provides scholarship assistance for the children who desire to participate in camp but lack the financial ability to independently do so. Please give as generously as you can and consider sponsoring a child’s summer camp experience.

Being that many of our members are not at the church when our youth groups meet, we thought it might be helpful to give you a sneak peek into one of our January Middle School Youth Group meetings. (Note: photos are from the February 21st All Youth Programming Snow Tubing Trip to Camelback Ski Resort)
We began our youth group with prayer, and then gave the youth a little free time before dinner. The youth enjoy playing basketball, air hockey, foosball, or ping pong in the gym, and this night was no exception. Sheila Heyer Rivera helped to prepare our meal, Lasagna with a side of broccoli, and dinner time moved quickly into discussing the historic events of the day.
This day was the first time any of the youth had watched an inauguration of a President, and the general consensus was that it was an exciting event. Many of the youth really understood its historic nature, and had been asked in school to write their thoughts concerning their viewing of the event.
We talked about the important role of government and the call of Scripture to pray for our political leaders. We will spend some more time in the future discussing the Christian’s role to advocate and the prophetic voice of the church should have to governments.
