As urban congregations serve their communities, many have found it helpful to set up special non-profit organizations in order to attract outside funding for their ministries.
The First Presbyterian Church in Germantown has established such an organization which has been named Creative Germantown Initiative ("Cree Gee” for short).
The mission of Cree Gee is to strengthen the Germantown Community through arts, recreation and education, serving persons of all ages as they experience the joys and challenges of urban living.
It sounds like a mouthful, but it includes many of our current ministries such as our concert series, drill team, basketball teams, summer day camp, summer urban learning program and Bread and Cup coffee house.
Last month Cree Gee was approved as a 501c3 (charitable non-profit organization) by the Internal Revenue Service.
We now will begin looking for outside funding to help us grow these vital ministries. Stay tuned for more updates!

On every night of the year, over 1000 children and their families are homeless in Philadelphia.
The Interfaith Hospitality Network, “the shelter that is not like a shelter” provides shelter, food and other assistance to our neighbors in need.
At two to four week intervals, member congregations offer hospitality and provide volunteers for IHN guest families. This hospitality make a huge difference in the lives of families as they achieve and accomplish their goals on the path to stability.
Our current hosting period began Sunday, 3/1 and continues through Sunday, 3/22.

I am currently the director of the Germantown X Clusive Drill Team with Contina Lundy. Six years ago I talked to Contina about the possibility of starting a drill team at First Church because I saw a need for a community-based program in the Germantown area.
I was a member of a drill team in Germantown years ago and even practiced here at the church on a few occasions during the winter months. Back then there were over ten teams within a five mile radius of the church.
Six years ago when the idea for our church’s drill team came to light there were only one or two teams left in the area.
I am very proud of the team and all of our volunteers and never thought we would grow to be so successful in such a short amount of time. The team has won many trophies, titles and has been requested to perform for many events.
It is rewarding to see former members who have grown up in our program return and give back to the team by bringing new members, coaching, helping fix equipment, and just enjoying themselves at their home away from home.
