This month we celebrate President’s weekend as February is the birth month of both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Both of these presidents fought for freedom, a freedom which we all cherish and enjoy.
As I write I am watching our country make history as we inaugurate our 44th President of the United States - the first African American President. People across political party lines, people of all ages, people around the world are watching. We have come a long way!
I have to believe that God is smiling on us as we demonstrate that there are no divisions in the eyes of God. That there is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:28)
To that I add there is no longer white or black, rich or poor, young or old; for all of you are one in Christ. We are all one in Christ!
This is a theological principle that we strive to live by at The First Presbyterian Church in Germantown as our congregation is made up of a diverse group of people who are spiritually led by a white woman and a black man. We have come a long way in our 200 year history!

It has been a number of years since First Church had a Christmas Festival, and the tradition was revived this past Advent season.
Over 100 people came to enjoy an evening of making eatable houses and Christmas decoration.
Outside in our parking lot we viewed a live nativity scene with farm animals surrounding Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus.
Inside we enjoyed a play of the Christmas story featuring our many First Church children and youth.

Vernon Park has a rich history dating back to the 1700s. Established as a park in 1892, it is an integral part of Germantown. The Friends of Vernon Park is a non-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to the restoration and upkeep of Vernon Park.
In recent years their partnership with the Department of Recreation and Philadelphia Green has completely transformed the park from an eyesore to a beautiful oasis that borders our church. The park is now used by the various neighbor organizations and our day camp.

This was by far the most difficult season in my three years of coaching the Disciples Basketball team.
As I reflect on another season, it’s easy to focus on some of the obstacles that stood in the way.
We had the daunting task of implementing six new players to our team. We lost one assistant coach but we really appreciate all the hard work and time he put in during his tenure. We even had a couple players defect to other teams in the league.
But where there is controversy, there is a measure of success.
It would have been easy for us to allow the distractions to hinder us from our goal of competing on the court and building relationships off but that didn’t happen....

Along with “exercise more”, “lose weight”, and “clean out that closet”, why not add “grow spiritually” to your New Year’s Resolutions list?
There are plenty of opportunities to strengthen your spiritual life at The First Presbyterian Church in Germantown:
There are two Christian Education classes that meet on Sunday’s: The Serendipity Bible Study and the Christian Fellowship Class.
In addition to these Sunday classes, two new Women’s Groups are forming. These “Circles” are a great way to fellowship with other women, study the Bible, take part in outreach projects, and have FUN!
