So often when members and friends are asked about The First Presbyterian Church in Germantown the word “diversity” is mentioned. We are told that we are unique among mainline Christian congregations because we are a diverse congregation when it comes to race.
We are diverse in so many more ways than racially and as a congregation we like to celebrate that fact. We even had a documentary film made about us
called Destined for Diversity. Click here to see it!
I recently read the following definition of diversity: Read More

Cheer on the Team Monday (1/30) 6:45pm at Germantown Friends School
By Valient Colomon
What more can I say about The First Presbyterian Church in Germantown Disciples’ Basketball team? The history of this team and I go way back. I remember when Chris first asked Christian about starting his own basketball team here at the church. It was the year of 2005. Chris, Christian and I were standing by the gym steps between the Jennings and Finney Room. Chris talked about his idea to make a team and Christian liked the idea. He said we’ll see what we can do and if we are able to find players. Of course that was not a problem.
Our record during the first league was not the best, but it sure was not as bad as it could have been. We had put that season all behind us. With the help of some new players, we went undefeated during the next season and competed in the championship game.

The Graterford Prison Project
by Don Carlin
“Why do you give gifts to prisoners who don’t deserve them?” my waitress asked me as I prepared to make my first trip to Graterford Prison to help prepare holiday packages for the inmates. Her question allowed me to share a few words about grace, about the free and undeserved gifts that God gives to all of us.
On December 6, in the rain, seven people from First Church traveled by church minibus to Graterford. We joined many other volunteers—Presbyterian, Episcopal, Mennonite and others—in the huge prison warehouse. In assembly-line fashion, we circled large, gift-laden tables again and again, filling clear plastic bags with the simple snack and toiletry items that would be given to the inmates the next day. Over 3,000 gift bags were filled, tied and packed.

Celebrating the Ministry of Eileen Jones
In a recent Sunday Coffee Hour, Eileen Jones was lauded and honored for her 25 years as a member of the staff of the church. Hired first as someone to supervise the children in the church’s day care program, she progressed to Parish Worker, then advanced to Christian Education Director, and, finally, today, she is the Director of Urban Ministry.
All along the way, however, she had her hands and soul in the Germantown Avenue Crisis Ministry of which she is the Executive Director. She says very confidently, “My heart lies in the Crisis Ministry.”

Dear Friends,
Who knows what this next year will bring to each of us individually, to our families, our community, our nation, our world, our church.
Last January we could not have imagined what would transpire in 2011. Did you have any idea that over these last 12 months we would endure the senseless act of an assailant opening fire outside a grocery store in Arizona, killing six people and wounding 13 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords? Did you have any idea that in countries around the world there would be protests and demonstrations leading to transitions in governance, and in our own country people camping out and “occupying” some of our major cities?
