On every night of the year, over 1000 children and their families are homeless in Philadelphia.
The Interfaith Hospitality Network, “the shelter that is not like a shelter” provides shelter, food and other assistance to our neighbors in need.
At two to four week intervals, member congregations offer hospitality and provide volunteers for IHN guest families. This hospitality make a huge difference in the lives of families as they achieve and accomplish their goals on the path to stability.
Our current hosting period began Sunday, 3/1 and continues through Sunday, 3/22.

It’s Lent! The 200th Lenten Season to be celebrated at The First Presbyterian Church in Germantown.
Actually, that’s probably not true, for as Presbyterians celebrating Lent is relatively new. Yes, we have always observed Holy Week with worship services on Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, but the weeks leading up to those days before Easter have been more a part of the Roman Catholic tradition than Presbyterian.
Recently, however, that has changed and as Presbyterians we take Lent very seriously. It begins with Ash Wednesday and continues for the next forty days (excluding Sundays).
Lent is a season of soul-searching and repentance. It is a season for reflection and taking stock. It originated in the fourth century as a time of preparation for those who were to be baptized and join the church on Easter Sunday.
Also, it is when those who had been separated from the Church would prepare to rejoin the community. Lent was a time of preparation. And so it is that preparation is still part of Lent as we, even Presbyterians, learn what it means to follow Jesus Christ.

This month we celebrate President’s weekend as February is the birth month of both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Both of these presidents fought for freedom, a freedom which we all cherish and enjoy.
As I write I am watching our country make history as we inaugurate our 44th President of the United States - the first African American President. People across political party lines, people of all ages, people around the world are watching. We have come a long way!
I have to believe that God is smiling on us as we demonstrate that there are no divisions in the eyes of God. That there is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:28)
To that I add there is no longer white or black, rich or poor, young or old; for all of you are one in Christ. We are all one in Christ!
This is a theological principle that we strive to live by at The First Presbyterian Church in Germantown as our congregation is made up of a diverse group of people who are spiritually led by a white woman and a black man. We have come a long way in our 200 year history!

Along with “exercise more”, “lose weight”, and “clean out that closet”, why not add “grow spiritually” to your New Year’s Resolutions list?
There are plenty of opportunities to strengthen your spiritual life at The First Presbyterian Church in Germantown:
There are two Christian Education classes that meet on Sunday’s: The Serendipity Bible Study and the Christian Fellowship Class.
In addition to these Sunday classes, two new Women’s Groups are forming. These “Circles” are a great way to fellowship with other women, study the Bible, take part in outreach projects, and have FUN!

Ted Walkenhorst has been teaching Senior High Sunday School at First Church for three years.
No one twisted Ted’s arm to join this vital ministry. He heard that there was a need for teachers and asked if he could teach “these incredible young people.”
When asked about what he finds most rewarding in teaching Sunday School, Ted had this to say: ”I love these kids. They are honest and caring individuals. They make teaching something to look forward to each week. They participate in discussions, ask good questions, and take turns leading us in prayer.”
