Next to be featured on the FPCG concert series is Warren Cooper and the Alexander/Cooper Project. They’ll be at the church on Sunday afternoon, April 26th, at 3:00 p.m. for a celebration of the Sacred Spirit in jazz.
The Alexander/Cooper Project is a band of professional musicians who have played all over the country and the globe. The group includes Warren Cooper, vocals; Tim Warfield, saxophone; Andrae Alexander, piano; Dexter Whitaker, bass; and Leon Alexander, drums.
These guys have real juice! A list of artists that members of the band have appeared with reads like a Who’s Who of jazz, gospel, and R & B: Dizzy Gillespie, Patti Labelle, Smokey Robinson, Nicholas Payton, Shirley Caesar, and Billy Preston to name just a few.
But is jazz really appropriate for the worship of God? Jazz… with its blue notes, its hot licks, and its swaggering flights of improvisational fancy? Let’s think about that for a moment.

The Lenten journey for 2009 is coming to an end. April 12th is Easter Sunday, the most glorious day in the Christian Church.
It is the day that we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is a day that we are reminded that the promises of God are true.
It is a day that we sing “Alleluia!” together as we know that because he lives, we will live also!
I, along with others from First Church, just returned from my first visit to the Holy Land. What a magnificent trip! One of the things we had the privilege to do while in Jerusalem was to walk along the Via Doloroso, which in Latin means the Way of Grief or the Way of Suffering.
This is a road that winds around Jerusalem and which is thought to be the path that Jesus took on that Good Friday. This is not a tree lined street, but one with old stone buildings on either side and with venders calling for your attention selling their wares. It was along this route that our Lord carried the cross on which he would soon be nailed to die a painful death . . . all on our behalf.
This year’s Holy Week will be all the more meaningful to me because of my trip, but we don’t have to visit these places to fully comprehend the significance of this week’s events on our faith.

On every night of the year, over 1000 children and their families are homeless in Philadelphia.
The Interfaith Hospitality Network, “the shelter that is not like a shelter” provides shelter, food and other assistance to our neighbors in need.
At two to four week intervals, member congregations offer hospitality and provide volunteers for IHN guest families. This hospitality make a huge difference in the lives of families as they achieve and accomplish their goals on the path to stability.
Our current hosting period began Sunday, 3/1 and continues through Sunday, 3/22.

To address the concern around closing Philadelphia area businesses, the Greater Germantown Business Association welcomes all to attend the Greater Germantown Business Association’s March Program, Social Media for Business Sustainability, on Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church in Germantown, 35 West Chelten Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19144.
The Association’s regular monthly meeting is held on the second Tuesday of every month; and, begins at 7:00 p.m. sharp with updates, the workshop immediately follows. Meeting adjourns at 8:00 p.m.
