The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
Rev. Nancy Reflects on the Advent Season
“It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” so the song tells us. I believe this to be true.
This is when people seem to care about others more than any other time of the year. We search for gifts to give that reflect our love and appreciation for the other. We even dig deep into our pockets to give financial offerings or food donations to help those we do not even know. Yes, it is a wonderful time of the year!
However, it is the MOST wonderful time of the year because of the birth that we celebrate this month.
All of the parties, written greetings, gift giving and even our donations are happening because a baby was born over 2,000 years ago and that birth changed the world. This is the time of year when we celebrate God’s great gift to the world and to each one of us - the gift of his son, Jesus Christ.
Because we celebrate the gift of Jesus Christ at this time of the year, it is a wonderful time to be part of all that is happening at The First Presbyterian Church in Germantown during December. We begin the month with our annual Messiah Concert on December 4 at 3:00. This has traditionally been the most popular concert of our series each year as we welcome the Philadelphia Sinfonia Orchestra and our own Germantown Oratorio Choir presenting one of the season’s favorite chorale pieces.
That concert is followed by our annual Christmas meal which will be a turkey din-ner. That same afternoon there will be a silent auction of some beautiful and creative gift baskets. Start your Christmas shopping early!
On December 18 our Community Christmas Festival will take place which will include crafts, singing, a living nativity in the park-ing lot, a Christmas play presented by our Church School students and possibly a visit from a large man in a red suit.
Advent worship services will be each Sunday morning leading the way to our Candlelight Christmas Eve Service. This year Christmas Day is on a Sunday! What a wonderful way to celebrate the giving of God’s great gift to us - the gift of his son, Jesus Christ, than be worshiping together on Christmas morning.
Yes, this is the MOST wonderful time of the year, and I hope that dur-ing the hustle and bustle of this busy season you will remember why, as Christians, we believe it is such a wonderful time.
See you in church!
