One in Christ
By Nancy Muth, Pastor
This month we celebrate President’s weekend as February is the birth month of both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Both of these presidents fought for freedom, a freedom which we all cherish and enjoy.
As I write I am watching our country make history as we inaugurate our 44th President of the United States - the first African American President. People across political party lines, people of all ages, people around the world are watching. We have come a long way!
I have to believe that God is smiling on us as we demonstrate that there are no divisions in the eyes of God. That there is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:28)
To that I add there is no longer white or black, rich or poor, young or old; for all of you are one in Christ. We are all one in Christ!
This is a theological principle that we strive to live by at The First Presbyterian Church in Germantown as our congregation is made up of a diverse group of people who are spiritually led by a white woman and a black man. We have come a long way in our 200 year history!
Make no mistake, as a country and as a church, we still have a long way to go. As a country we will be led by a man who is not yet 50 years old. A man who seeks to unite our country and work for justice and equality. As a church we are led by a man who walked this earth over 2,000 years ago. A man who taught, healed, obeyed his heavenly Father's will and died on a cross for you and me and then was raised from death. It is from this man that we receive our true freedom!
The world is watching us as a country. Our community is watching us as a church in Germantown.
May we trust in God and follow the man who leads us . . . the man in whom we are one . . . Jesus Christ.
See you in Church!
