More Than A Game
by Chris Scott
The game of basketball has always been a passion for me. There is nothing more enjoyable to watch a group of people play as one and paint a masterpiece of a good basketball game.
It was in 2005 when I decided I wanted to create my own masterpiece. With the help of Director of Christian Ed, Christian Heyer-Rivera, we decided to form the Disciples Basketball team a team for players 18 and under.
In the first season, we had 8 players and finished the season 2-7. One of the victories came via forfeit. I was a young coach and we were a young team but the foundation was set for a successful program.
Fast forward to today. The Disciples are preparing for another season.
The roster expanded from 7 to 20 players. This coming season will be the first time the Disciples will feature two 18 and under teams and its first 15 and under team. The encouraging thought in all of this is former players of the Disciples Melvin Brown, Valient Solomon, and Illya Pasture (JayR) has decided to return to the team and help coach.
On the court, with a 49-16 record and 5 consecutive trips to the championship game, the Disciples have been successful over the last five years.
Off the court, the relationships that have been built with the team have been the greatest reward. The program has received positive feedback from players, parents, and even other coaches for the way we connect with our players. I remember receiving a phone call from a high school basketball coach. The conversation went like this: "I just wanted to tell you Demetrius just praises you constantly. All I hear about is the Disciples this and coach Chris that. I just wanted to talk to you about your program."
Disciple's basketball is a relational ministry. Its more than just a group of players getting together and putting a ball in the net. We coach our players to be better on the court and even better away from the court. The best part of it for me is getting to know the players and growing with them as a coach and a friend.
Basketball just makes that journey a little more enjoyable.
