We come from a rich history of believers, and we are still going strong. Join me for the next 365 days, starting December 1st to lift up the name of First Church. We will cover the building, the staff, the members, friends and our budget in prayer.
But first, a little background. Sometime ago I joined First Church, I won’t share the date because doing that will share my age! Anyway, I remember sharing my statement of faith and how important my prayer life was to me. Prayer was something that I didn’t ever question because of the strong foundation my parents, Mary and Frank Lundy, set for me. I understood at a young age that when you pray and believe God for who He is, great and wonderful things can occur.
Fast forward to today. After the Congregational Meeting, we learned that we look at a very dismal 2012 like many others. But unlike those many others who only see the worst outcome possible, we have a slight edge. We are believers of The Most High, Jesus Christ. While we can focus on the impossible, we have the pleasure of knowing we serve The God of Possible.
I recall hearing a sermon two summers ago from a pastor who spoke to this belief. He spoke to the impossible goal of securing a building with no funds. All the while, a group of women were meeting and praying for his ministry success. Prayer works and changes situations at a blink of an eye. By the end of his sermon, my spirit sang. I knew what the outcome was before he even finished the sermon because I understand the power of prayer. I know that The Lord I serve will supply all our needs if we simply ask Him to do so. But this doesn’t mean you don’t do your part. We must continue to be faithful servants and tithe. Now is not the time to sit back and do nothing. Now is the time to put your faith in action.
Please note I am not a learned theologian, just a regular Joe with the heart of the Lord. I believe that prayer simply requires you to have faith and be willing to believe God for who He says He is. Your faith doesn’t have to be supernatural because we are told by Jesus himself, to have the faith the size of a mustard seed, you can move mountains. Yes, mountains. You may be looking at me oddly right now, but it’s true. Your faith in the God we serve can move mountains, change a situation or simply encourage the weak hearted. I can say this to you because I know how much my life has change because of prayer. It wasn’t the easiest thing to do because I am such a control freak but I learned that once I gave up my need for control how smoothly my life ran. When I became serious about my adult prayer life, I didn’t worry as much. I had a sense of peace that I had never experienced before.
So I encourage each one of you to join me in praying for our Church. We have a mountain in front of us, but I believe we can move it as a praying body of believers. The history of The First Presbyterian Church says so.
