Hands-On Missions
Email Rev. Kevin if you are interested in participating in a serving trip
FPCG members and friends who’ve participated in mission trips we’ve taken to Pearlington, Mississippi (after Hurricane Katrina) often report feeling blessed beyond the degree to which they blessed the disaster victims they served. Although it may not be possible to measure the degree of blessing given or received, it is clear that hands-on mission, in partnership with those in crisis, can inspire and deepen the faith of all involved.
The Christian Education Committee needs your help in gauging the interest and availability of FPCG members and friends in participating in one or more mission opportunities this program year.
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is our denomination‘s primary program for coordinating emergency response in areas of crisis nationally and internationally.
As described on their website, PDA‘s focus is the long-term recovery of disaster-impacted communities, in part. through the coordination of multiple short term disaster recovery mission trip opportunities in a variety of locations.
For example, PDA has volunteer team opportunities for rebuilding homes in Alabama that were damaged or destroyed by the tornado that struck the state in April. The team can be as small as three or large as 25 participants, ranging from age 16 and up, and preferably participating on-site for a week. The skills required can vary from construction expertise to listening to cooking and cleaning—each situation is unique.
Although PDA does not currently have work team opportunities in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, there are other church-related organizations such as The Other Carpenter and The Philadelphia Project which may be able to accommodate volunteers closer to us for a shorter period.
If you would be interested in participating in a mission trip, please contact Reverend Kevin Porter, e-mail by October 16 listing ―FPCG mission trip‖ in the subject line. Please include your skills, availability, and any other considerations that would influence your ability to be part of a FPCG mission team. Based on the responses, we will research several options and invite you to a meeting to consider how we could put together a volunteer team.
Don‘t miss out on this opportunity
