Disciples’ Basketball!
Cheer on the Team Monday (1/30) 6:45pm at Germantown Friends School

What more can I say about The First Presbyterian Church in Germantown Disciples’ Basketball team? The history of this team and I go way back. I remember when Chris first asked Christian about starting his own basketball team here at the church. It was the year of 2005. Chris, Christian and I were standing by the gym steps between the Jennings and Finney Room. Chris talked about his idea to make a team and Christian liked the idea. He said we’ll see what we can do and if we are able to find players. Of course that was not a problem.
Our record during the first league was not the best, but it sure was not as bad as it could have been. We had put that season all behind us. With the help of some new players, we went undefeated during the next season and competed in the championship game.
Although we did not win, it showed us what we were capable of. It showed us how great we were. It showed us that we can be even greater. And great we became.
We had some amazing record setting games. We went to every championship game up until my senior year of high school. Each of those championship games we fell short of victory... fell short of being number 1. It was very heart breaking.
We just couldn't get over that hump.
My senior year seemed promising for finally winning a championship. The problem was that a playoff game was the same as my prom night, so that included the teammates that went to the same school as I. It was nerve-wracking that I could not be there with my team. They fought hard but did not come out with a win.
Despite all the championship games we have lost, this team means more to me than that. Each year the team grew with more players. We became a family. I had good friends that I now call my brothers. Chris was and still is a great coach. Christian was and still is a big support of the team. The First Presbyterian Church in Germantown members were always there to cheer us on. I loved it!
Now that I am assistant coaching I plan to give the youth the same support and guidance that I was given. But I still have not forgotten about getting over that hump...winning a championship.
