Coach Chris: Reflections on the Fall Basketball Season
This was by far the most difficult season in my three years of coaching the Disciples Basketball team.
As I reflect on another season, it’s easy to focus on some of the obstacles that stood in the way.
We had the daunting task of implementing six new players to our team. We lost one assistant coach but we really appreciate all the hard work and time he put in during his tenure. We even had a couple players defect to other teams in the league.
But where there is controversy, there is a measure of success.
It would have been easy for us to allow the distractions to hinder us from our goal of competing on the court and building relationships off but that didn’t happen....

Although we alternated wins and losses throughout the season, we still competed in our fourth consecutive championship game.
It was by the will of the entire team and the leadership of team captain Valient Solomon that allowed us to stay level headed in the midst of all the adversity.
Currently, the Disciples are in hiatus during the winter season but will return in the spring with a renewed spirit and even larger commitment to building our ministry. Maybe even win a championship.
We want to thank all the fans, supporters, and well wishers. You've really made this experience more than I could ever have imagined.
Player Profile: Jay R Pasture
This month's player profile is on Illya Pasture better known as Jay R. Jay R is a new addition to the Disciples basketball team and made an immediate impact on our team. He is an outstanding player on the court but an even better human being away from basketball.
Jay R is a senior at BOK high school in South Philadelphia. His favorite subject is anything involving history.
Jay R is very vocal on the court but has a laid back and quiet personality when he isn't giving the other team's defense fits. He says the things he enjoys most about the basketball team are the family like environment, everyone's drive to succeed and the coaching.
The one thing Jay R has learned from the team is to have trust in people because you have a better opportunity to win when you have others helping you. This is not just basketball, but it pertains to life in general.
When asked the question of how would he encourage another to join the ministry, Jay R replied, "I would tell them it's a great environment. Coach Chris is great at helping his players even if it isn't about basketball."
Come see Jay R and the rest of the Disciples when they return in the Spring of `09.
